The Dark Knight Completes Hong Kong Filming
November 12, 2007
Source-The International Herald Tribune
The International Herald Tribune reports that Warner Bros. has wrapped production for The Dark Knight in Hong Kong. Here's a clip, including spoilers:
The new Batman movie starring Christian Bale has finished most of its filming in Hong Kong with a scene showing dozens of police officers storming a skyscraper in the financial district, the local production company assisting the filmmakers said Monday.
The sequence filmed late Sunday and early Monday, which did not involve any of the movie's stars, marks the end of a high-profile shoot clouded by pollution and energy consumption concerns.
An official at Hong Kong's October Pictures said filmmakers could shoot more footage of Hong Kong's famed skyline at sunset, but it was unlikely. The official declined to give his name.

Batman crew steamed up
November 10, 2007
Source- Hong Kong Standard.
Tempers were frayed when the shooting of the latest Batman movie was interrupted by crowds of fans trying to get a closer glimpse of the caped crusader as police and other security personnel battled with the lunch-hour traffic around Hong Kong's oldest wet market.
In a tense moment, a member of the film crew lashed out at Film Services Office representatives, calling for more police reinforcements.
Tempers were cooled after an FSO staff member reassured the filmmaker there were 100 plainclothes officers in the area and that a large number of uniformed officers would not be appropriate during filming.
Spectators flooded the area around Gage Street, where The Dark Knight was being filmed. The scene quickly turned into scrums as onlookers tried to get a closer glimpse of the award-winning actor Morgan Freeman and Christian Bale, who stars as Batman.
About five officers and six security staff, including two men wearing New York Police Department SWAT T-shirts, were managing the crowds as well as the traffic.
The shooting took place from noon during the hectic market delivery time when dozens of lorries drive up Lyndhurst Terrace, a narrow road, below the Central escalator.
It appeared to be a logistics nightmare with the film crew's van being ordered to move out of the area by police.
One fan who was waiting to catch a glimpse of Bale, said: "It is going to create a lot of chaos. People will start getting annoyed if this drags on for days."
Despite the chaos,
some still managed to remain in high spirits. Katty Law, an environmentalist fighting against the redevelopment of the market area, said the government should take note of Batman's choice.
"Batman's producers chose the market because of the unique environment of the area. I am sure they would not have chosen a shopping mall," she said.
Later there was some high drama when Batman leapt off Hong Kong's tallest building, IFC2, at night after a helicopter and plane had circled the skyscraper for hours.
Yesterday's chaos was the latest hitch faced by the producers who earlier enraged office workers and residents by asking them to keep their lights on during the filming.

Ledger Talks More On THe Joker
November 11, 2007
Source- IESB
This from IESB-
IESB sat down with Heath Ledger this afternoon in New York to discuss his role in the new Todd Haynes Bob Dylan biopic, I'm Not There. We'll have the full video interview up soon, but Ledger briefly discussed his upcoming role in The Dark Knight.
If I had any doubt about Ledger as Joker, it vanished as soon as I saw him in person. His hair was grown out for the role and his eyes darted around the room, never quite making contact with mine. At his side was a clothespin that he handled the entire interview, pinching his fingers as he spoke. It wasn't hard to believe that at any moment he would leap to his feet and kill everybody in the room.
IESB: You're going right from I'm Not There where you have to put your spin on a character set up by other actors and right into Batman where the Joker has been done by not only Jack Nicholson but Cesar Romero, etc as well as the comics. Does it compare at all?
LEDGER: I really don't know. It's like chalk and cheese. My preparation process for this and my process for the Joker are completely different. I mean, for the Joker I locked myself away in a hotel room for six weeks. I just formulated a voice and a posture and found a real psychology behind the Joker. I really put a lot of work into it. And the experience also on a production scale, by the way, is obviously a completely different shoot. Batman is just such a machine. It's huge and I've never worked on anything that big. And the movie is going to be surprisingly good! It's far exceeded my expectations.
IESB: Were there any specific comics you based your version off of?
LEDGER: Well, The Killing Joke is the one that's being passed around and Arkham Asylum kind of. But I really tried to read the comics and put it down. You know, I was a big fan of Jack Nicholson - still am - his portrayal of the Joker was perfect for Tim Burton's world and if Tim Burton had come to me and he was doing the sequel and he asked me to play the Joker in his movie, I wouldn't do it. I couldn't. Because you couldn't touch what Jack Nicholson did. It would be a crime. When Chris came to me, I'd already seen Batman Begins and I really liked it. Because I'd already seen it, I already knew the world, which he had created. I instantly knew of an angle. I instantly knew a way into this character. A way to create a character to fit into this world and so it was fairly immediate. I've got straight away the fact that we're both on the same page in terms of where we want it to be. But I guess we have to wait and see. I haven't seen any of it yet.

Nolan Debunks Dark Knight Pollution Story
November 9, 2007
Source-SHH
The AFP reports that The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan said Friday a planned scene in which Batman dived into Hong Kong's Victoria Harbor was cut because of script changes and not the water's severe pollution.
"That was my decision, nothing to do with pollution. It was simply a script decision," said Nolan, "Once you see the finished film, you will understand why. As far as the pollution question goes, I honestly have no problem dumping movie stars in it."
The film will use Hong Kong's spectacular skyline during several days filming there, Nolan added.
Bale said he was excited about climbing to the top of some the city's highest buildings "and jumping off of them."
Speaking alongside co-star Morgan Freeman at a packed press conference, Bale said he would be shooting on the top of Hong Kong's tallest building, the 90-storey IFC2.

Dark Knight Lights & Nicholson on the Joker
November 7, 2007
Source-MTV
The Associated Press reports that The Dark Knight production came under fire for asking tenants along a Hong Kong waterfront to keep their lights on all night for a week to better show off the city's glass and steel skyline.
In related news, Jack Nicholson was asked by MTV what he thinks of Warner Bros. using the Joker again in the new Batman movie. He didn't hold anything back:
Let me be the way I'm not in interviews. I'm furious. I'm furious. [He laughs.] They never asked me about a sequel with the Joker. I know how to do that! Nobody ever asked me.

The Dark Knight Poster On It's Way
November 6th 2007
Source-SHH
I heard from a reliable source that the TDK poster was printed en masse on the 31st Of Oct. and will be hanging in movie theatres by the 30th of November...speculation is that we will glimpse the poster online on the 17th. True fans know where to look. Now the question is, what will be on the poster? My educated guess: It will give us a permanent grin...of the Chelsea variety.

Exclusive: The Joker Intro For TDK
November 6, 2007
Source: Latino Review
This evening, here in NYC, I had dinner with an executive high up on the Warner Bros. food chain in which we spoke about the on going WGA strike and our conversation changed to one of the most anticipated films coming out next summer.
The following is what he had to say on the introduction of THE JOKER in the upcoming THE DARK KNIGHT!
WARNING! MAJOR PLOT SPOILER AHEAD! READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!
The Dark Knight begins with the Joker robbing a huge bank (we’ve seen photos of this everywhere). The bank is where the mob and all the gangs in Gotham keep all of their money. The Joker takes this money and holds it “ransom”. The Joker then says to the mob and the gangs of Gotham, “If you help me take down Batman, you’ll get your money back. If not, I’m going to burn it all.” This is how the Joker assembles his army to take down Batman.

Heath Ledger on The Joker
November 5, 2007
Source: The New York Times
The New York Times talked to Heath Ledger about playing The Joker in Warner Bros.' highly-anticipated The Dark Knight, opening in theaters on July 18, 2008. Here are clips from the interview:
He is here in London filming the latest episode of the "Batman" franchise, "The Dark Knight." It is a physically and mentally draining role — his Joker is a "psychopathic, mass-murdering, schizophrenic clown with zero empathy" he said cheerfully — and, as often happens when he throws himself into a part, he is not sleeping much.
"Last week I probably slept an average of two hours a night," he said. "I couldn't stop thinking. My body was exhausted, and my mind was still going." One night he took an Ambien, which failed to work. He took a second one and fell into a stupor, only to wake up an hour later, his mind still racing.
Here too was his Joker diary, which he began compiling four months before filming began. It is filled with images and thoughts helpful to the Joker back story, like a list of things the Joker would find funny. (AIDS is one of them.) Mr. Ledger seemed almost embarrassed that the book had been spotted, as if he had been caught trying to get extra credit in school.

Dark Knight Scene Cancelled Due to Pollution
November 4, 2007
Source- The Associated Press
The Associated Press (via CNN) reports that a scene that was to be filmed in Hong Kong for The Dark Knight was cancelled because of pollution in Hong Kong's iconic harbor (Spoiler ahead!):
A scene in which Batman was to drop from a plane into the harbor has been axed after the movie's producers found the water quality could pose a potential health risk, the South China Morning post reported in its Sunday edition.
"The plan was for Batman to be seen jumping into the water and then climbing up some bamboo, or something similar," the Post quoted an unnamed production official as saying.
"But when they checked a water sample, they found all sorts of things; salmonella and tuberculosis, so it was canceled. Now the action will cut to inside a building."

The Dark Knight to Make Noise in Hong Kong
Source: NineMSN November 3, 2007
NineMSN reports that Hong Kong residents have been warned to expect a week of noisy evenings as a low-flying aircraft and helicopter film scenes for The Dark Knight.
Thousands of letters have been sent out by the film's production company telling residents that a helicopter and a C130 aircraft will swoop low over downtown areas to film the city's evening skyline.
The letter says the sound level will be similar to that of buses and promises that the production company will do all it can to "restore tranquillity ... as early as possible."
The Batman sequel will be filmed in Hong Kong from November 6 to 12. Christian Bale and Morgan Freeman are expected to be on location. IMAX cameras will be used for the shooting.
A major outdoor stunt for the Warner Bros. movie is to be filmed at the International Finance Centre (IFC) complex while the Peninsula Hotel will be used for other scenes.

Filming Still On In London/Batman Has White Lenses
23rd October 2007
Source: SHH/Kino.de
On the evening of Sunday 21st Oct a couple of dark blue SWAT vans with ‘City of Gotham Police Dept.’ written on the sides were parked on the site, and a dark blue helicopter (didn’t see any insignia) was flying low near the power station. This morning (Monday 22nd Oct) as I passed the area on the train again, the two SWAT vans were still in the same place, but a long white tent had now been erected nearby and there were quite a few cars on the site, so I guess some filming must have taken place at some point during the day as well.
Meanwhile, a German website Kino.de has a very good article about The Dark Knight. The site is in German, after I translate it with Yahoo here’s what I got:
Batman will go to Hongkong for some kind of “gangster hunting”, but the producer Chuck Roven won’t tell us why Batman travels to Hongkong.
The IMAX preview with I Am Legend is the first five minutes of the film.
“The whole thing is not ‘Joker Begins’, because we did not tell how the Joker became what he is”, says director Christopher Nolan. “During these five minutes it is shown how the joker of the small crook becomes the most-dreaded gangster of the city - it is more of a “The Rise of the Joker”
Batman’s new mask will have white lenses on the eyes when he turn on the Bat-sonar detection.

On Wednesday, you may have noticed The Dark Knight tie-in site WhySoSerious.com , where a jack-o'-lantern had appeared that looked much like the one used for "Batman: The Long Halloween," a 13-issue comic written by Jeph Loeb with art by Tim Sale.
If you look again now, you'll see that the candle is really burning down more every day, making it more obvious that something might happen on Halloween.
Be sure to stay tuned to the site on All Hallows' Eve October 31st!

Yoakam Was Offered 2 Roles in The Dark Knight
October 17, 2007
Source: The Examiner
The Examiner talked to Country Music star Dwight Yoakam about having to turn down two roles for The Dark Knight. Here's a clip:
And actually, there were a couple of different parts," says the Renaissance man. "There was a ne'er-do-well cop who's one of Gary Oldman's guys, but I really couldn't focus enough to deal with that. Then they came back to me and said 'We know you don't have time to do that one, but can you do this one instead?' And it was a banker who had dealings with the Joker, and I wanted so badly to go do that banker and mess around with [Joker portrayer] Heath Ledger. But I just couldn’t do it."

Dark Knight set visit
October 12, 2007
Source-Moviehole
New Moviehole recruit 'Charley Bowdre' was flown to the set of “The Dark Knight” this week - on the Batwing, I hear - and got to chat with the folks behind the Batty blockbuster. The full report will be up closer to the film’s release, but for the meantime, here’s a tease:
Firstly, a bit on the “Justice League” movie – which neither Christian Bale (Batman) or director Christopher Nolan will be a part of.
Charley Bowdre: What do you make of the announcement to the Justice League movie and seeing as it features Batman, will it affect your own Bat Universe?
Chris Nolan: Truly.. I don't know anything about it and I'm just making my own film and that's what matters.
And will there be more Batman movies after this one?
Is anyone else contracted to a third movie?
Chuck Roven (Producer): I believe Christian is contracted to a third and er.. Gary.. Gary Oldman. I don't know if anyone else is.. I can tell you Batman is going to Hong Kong, where we're filming and that'll be the first time Batman's left Gotham. And Gotham..Gotham look and feels like Gotham. The skyline.. Gotham.
Charley Bowdre: Is there anything significant about the skyline of Gotham, because for some reason Joel Schumacher whacked in the Statue of Liberty and it's like.. Is this New York or Gotham?
Chuck Roven: Ha. Yeah.. er. No, it's Gotham. It's a thriving metropolis. The mono rail is back in there and that's looking good.
That's our tease. Next year you’ll get the full low-down.
(by the way, we’ve got it on good authority that a new 'Joker'-heavy trailer will be out in December - attached to "I am Legend" but possibly only in IMAX)

Dark Knight Explosion Rocks Londeners
October 12, 2007
Source: The London Paper
The London Paper has a spoilerish report on a explosion that took place on Thursday night for The Dark Knight in London. If you don't want to know a thing, click back now, otherwise here's a clip:
These were the amazing scenes as Battersea Power Station appeared to explode in the dead of night last night.
The emergency services were flooded with calls from local residents who feared the defunct electricity generating plant had been targeted by terrorists.
But they were reassured the 200ft fireball, accompanied by columns of grey smoke, which could bee seen for miles across the capital, was a special effect for the latest Batman film.
The spectacular stunt scene, in which Batman actor Christian Bale narrowly cheats death, is believed to be the opening sequence of the fifth caped crusader movie The Dark Knight.

And Two-Face Look's Like?
Tuesday 09th October
EXCLUSIVE
UPDATED
Just recieved this, Made pretty interesting reading-
'Hi there, i work for Warners, i'd love to say where but hope you can understand why i cannot. I've been following your site for some time and while it may not be up there with the bigger sites in popularity you certainly have enthusiasm.(thanks.....i think?) So here i'm going to give you your first scoop, the look of Two Face in the Dark Knight.
Firstly its nothing i repeat NOTHING like Batman Forever, for starters theres no straight line down the middle neither is it bright purple. It's patchy and does not cover the whole of the right side the coloring is that of a darker skin tone, but more noticable. The skin also has some sagging and wrinkling to it, dont expect gory, it aint but it IS very realistic.
For the record there's no two tone suit either, not in this outing atleast.
These guys have done there research. I know you have no reason to believe i'm legit but what i sent with this Email will hopefully go some way to proving it's legit. (It does)
Regards.'
So there you go, take from that what you will. Only time will tell if this turns out to be true or not.
Update: The same source has got back to me and has revealed Two Face is roughly in the last act of the film, how he comes to be scarred he does not yet know. Options include a mentioned bomb by the Joker or the more comic acurate Maroni acid attack.

Teaser Poster On It's Way & Description
October 9th, 2007
Yeah you may have already heard this on other Bat sites and telling you the one sheet is coming is as obvious as telling you to put milk on your corn flakes but here's what i've heard so far regardless. The one sheet is currently circulating around the worldwide offices of warner Brothers and is not simply as you may think the promotional picture of the bat logo breaking up, so what is it? Well i hear at the moment it's a picture of Ledger in full Joker garb crushing a bat, not the logo but an actual bat. Wether this is the poster we'll get to see or just a proposed idea remains to be seen but thats whats doing the rounds at the moment.

The Dark Knight Returns to Bedfordshire
October 7, 2007
Bedford Today reports that Batman has returned to Bedfordshire:
They may be the sort of misleading monikers planted by the Riddler to sow confusion among the righteous, but a clutch of sneaky signposts pointing the way to the Cardington airship sheds are the evidence Batman is being filmed again in the area.
The signs, which bear the letters RFK, direct traffic off the southern bypass through Shortstown and towards Shed Number Two, where the latest flick featuring Gotham City's black-clad defender is before the cameras.

Caine Gives Away Some Secrets
Source: Movie Hole
October 6th 2007
The excitement, the drama, the laughter. Speaking with Sir Michael Caine is a thrilling, amusement park ride-like experience. I recently met up with him and Kenneth Branagh to discuss their tense new cat-and-mouse like caper Sleuth. After chatting about the film in length, I breached the subject of The Dark Knight with Mr. Caine, who seemed incredibly anxious to talk about the upcoming Batman sequel. "Is there anything new you can tell me about The Dark Knight?"
The classically trained actor smiled, a bit of menace laced throughout his gleeful grin, "Yes. I can give it away. I can tell you the biggest secret. The most shocking thing for both you and I..." He took a beat, playing to the camera that was capturing our interview, "It's Heath Ledger as the Joker. He is going to surprise a lot of people. He is absolutely terrifying. I'd say that he is the scariest thing I've ever seen on screen."
Well, okay, we already knew that. He told another publication the same thing less than a week ago. So I pressed the matter with him a bit, "Does Alfred and the Joker get into an altercation?"
He shook his head with a certain type of salesman like delight, "Yes. They do. They get into quite the altercation."
"Does Alfred make it out alive?"
This is when Caine put his finger to his lips and shushed me, "Now, that would be giving too much away."
"Well, are you signed on to do a third sequel?"
Michael laughed heartedly, and then shrugged with indifference, "You tell me!"
I guess we'll have to wait until July 18th, 2008, when The Dark Knight opens to find out if Batman's butler makes it out alive. In the mean time, you can check out Michael Caine's award worthy performance in Sleuth starting October 12th, 2007

SHEDDING LIGHT ON ‘THE DARK KNIGHT'
October 1, 2007
Source: Wizard
“If it was up to me, you wouldn’t see anything until the movie came out,” said “Dark Knight” director Christopher Nolan without any hint of apology. As he introduced a super-secret clip of the film to 1,200 screaming fans at Wizard World Chicago during an exclusive “Dark Knight” panel, Nolan made sure the audience knew just how special the viewing was. Considering Nolan went to great lengths to keep the film protected from prying, spoiler-hungry eyes (the production was once codenamed “Rory’s First Kiss” to lessen attention), it was clear Nolan wasn’t comfortable exhibiting an unfinished product.
“Please be kind,” added the anxious director as security guards crept into the aisles with infrared night-vision gear to catch attendees attempting to record the footage. “This is a rough, rough cut.”
What followed, despite only shooting for nearly four months in Chicago, was about two minutes of pure Bat-fan-gasm, filled with plenty of Heath Ledger’s Joker, tons of action and the world’s first glimpse at the film’s other villain—Aaron Eckhart as Two-Face.
The director has every right to be secretive. The sequel to 2005’s “Batman Begins” doesn’t open until July 18, 2008, after all. Plus, if it weren’t for Nolan’s fresh, practical, cinematic approach to the Bat-mythos, the world’s last memories of a big-screen Bruce Wayne would’ve been lost in a sea of Bat-nipples thanks to a sputtered-out ’90s franchise. He’s earned the right to dictate what people see and when.
But it’s time to lift that leathery cowl and explore the elements of “The Dark Knight” that will make it DC Comics’ biggest blockbuster yet.
JOKER’S WILD
Moments before “Batman Begins” ended, Jim Gordon (played by Gary Oldman) approached Christian Bale’s Batman about a new thug in town, and in every theater across the land, the flashing of the joker playing card sent movie-goers into unbridled fits of hoots and hollers.
“We found a way of looking at the character and saw what role he could play in the film,” explained Nolan. “The joker card at the end of the first film created the right kind of feeling. That was the hook that got us thinking about the next one.”
Nolan’s writing partner (and younger brother) Jonah pointed the director toward the Joker’s first two comic book stories, both of which took place in 1940’s Batman #1. “We’ve come around to something that’s eerily close to those first two appearances,” revealed the director.
In the issue, the Joker appears as a grinning mastermind who predicts his murderous crimes over the radio before meticulously carrying them out. Each cold-blooded, calculated killing ultimately ends with the victim’s face frozen into a solid, monstrous grin. If the film version follows closely, as the writers have said it will, expect plenty of chilling death scenes.
“Once we established ‘Batman Begins,’ it was one take on Batman,” explained screenwriter David S. Goyer. “We had to decide, ‘How does the Joker fit in this world?’”
Part of that problem was solved when actor Heath Ledger (“Brokeback Mountain”) joined the cast in July 2006. One of the premier actors of his generation, Ledger dove into the role with an understanding of what he didn’t want to convey in the film.
“I’m not going for the same thing [Jack Nicholson] went for,” Ledger said in interviews. “That would be stupid. Tim Burton did a more fantastical kind of thing and Chris Nolan is doing nitty-gritty handheld realism. I love what [Nicholson] did, and that is part of why I want to do that role. But it would obviously be murder if I tried to imitate what he did.”
“What Heath is doing,” Oldman triumphantly stated in Chicago, searching for the right words to finish his thought, “…he’s going to knock everyone out of the park.”
Oldman’s words came true moments later during the screened footage. Flashing between scenes of the Joker robbing a bank and taking a Batman-administered body-slam in a police station, the teaser hit its Joker crescendo when a tired, emotionless Joker steadily opened machine gun fire on Gotham. Empty, deranged and angry, this was the Joker the audience was waiting for, and their wall-shaking screams confirmed it.
But it was the unexpected cameo of another villain that brought down the house.
TWO-FACE RETURNS
In “Batman Begins,” mob kingpin Carmine Falcone rules Gotham’s underground. When good guy District Attorney Carl Banks sticks his nose in Falcone’s business, he finds himself on the receiving end of a gangland shooting. Fast-forward shortly afterwards and Harvey Dent arrives on the scene.
“Dark Knight” promotional art features Dent running for DA, and like his comic counterpart, he wins the election. Vowing to clean up the city’s rampant crime rate, Dent takes a no-nonsense, Eliot Ness stance and mows down the street scum at the court level behind Lt. Gordon’s growing arrest record. Of course, that justice crusade comes with a price.
While the exact details leading up to Dent’s disfigurement haven’t been made public, comic fans can tell you Dent suffered acid burns over half his face during a court case. The attack sent Dent into a psychotic fit, resulting in the birth of the unhinged Two-Face. As soon as Eckhart was announced as Dent in February 2007, fans wondered if the actor might pull double duty as Two-Face, too. The footage in Chicago, along with comments made by Eckhart in interviews, put those questions to bed.
In the final moments of the clip, as explosions and sightings of the Joker resonated in the brains of the audience, a half-dollar spins wildly onto a barroom table. Two-Face plops down in a bar stool on screen with his back to the camera.
A bartender timidly pours a shot while staring up at Two-Face, crimson-maroon scar tissue running down the left side of the villain’s neck below slightly discolored hair. “Dent?” the jarred man screams in disbelief. “I thought you were dead!”
Then Two-Face speaks for the first time, saying only one word with a gravel-filled but glib voice: “Half.”
“Batman is a complex character, and Two-Face comes a little bit from the same world,” Eckhart explained in interviews. “I’m looking for the tension between the two, the similarities between the two. I want to find what’s similar to Batman and then find what’s opposite to him.”
BAT-PLOT
The title “The Dark Knight” provides a bigger clue to the movie’s plot than you might think. Just like “Batman Begins” explored the beginnings of Batman, “Dark Knight” looks to explore the Caped Crusader’s full-on immersion into protecting Gotham from its own shadows.
“‘Batman Begins’ was an origin story, and the important thing was to move the story forward,” described Nolan of the first film’s themes. “In [‘Dark Knight’], the detective [elements] will help move the story along.”
Reports indicate “Dark Knight” takes place shortly after the end of “Batman Begins” with Gordon still trying to clean up the Gotham streets after his promotion to lieutenant, Bruce Wayne rebuilding his family home with trusty butler Alfred Pennyworth (Michael Caine) and Batman refining his crimefighting methods when new baddies hit town.
After Bats took down Falcone in the last film, a criminal power vacuum sucks countless thugs and gangsters into Gotham with plans to control the city. This, of course, summons plenty of the eccentric villains Gotham is known for, and as more and more fill the streets, Batman, Gordon and Dent scramble to keep the peace. The influx of new bad guys also pushes Bats to develop new gadgets, including a streamlined bodysuit complete with projectile glove blades and a “Batpod” motorbike packing grappling hooks, cannons and machine guns.
Meanwhile, according to the teaser trailers, the lower criminals start to side with a single leader in desperation as the mobsters begin picking each other off. In the clip, Bruce Wayne and Alfred discuss the crime wave before Alfred lays the situation out on the line.
“You hammered them, and in their desperation, they turned to a man they didn’t fully understand,” he says, referring to the Joker. “Some men aren’t looking for anything logical. They can’t be bought, bullied, reasoned or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.”
The Chicago footage echoed that sentiment as scenes of Gotham cars and buildings literally on fire littered the clip, proving the power struggle mutates into a gang war at one point. As for Joker plot specifics, Ledger points to one comic in particular.
“The Killing Joke was the one that was handed to me,” admitted the actor in interviews. “I guess that book explains a little bit of where [the Joker’s] from, but not too much.”
The Killing Joke, written by Alan Moore with art by Brian Bolland, explores the origins of the man who would become the Joker—a loser comedian caught up in a crime and then accidentally disfigured after his wife and baby die in an unconnected mishap. And even if the details are different, a similar, sympathetic glimpse into the slow, tortured birth of the Joker may be present in “Dark Knight.”
LAW AND LOVE
Aside from the fact that “Dark Knight” marks the first time a Batman film hasn’t featured the hero’s name in the title, it’s also the first film to feature a returning love interest for the character—kinda.
In “Batman Begins,” Katie Holmes played Bruce Wayne’s childhood friend Rachel Dawes, who becomes Gotham’s assistant DA. Later in the film, Dawes and Wayne begin sharing a slim romantic link after she discovers he’s Batman.
In January 2007, reports of Holmes leaving the cast surfaced. Her reps revealed the actress had joined the cast of “Mad Money,” a buddy film with Queen Latifah and Diane Keaton with a conflicting shooting schedule that would keep her from appearing in both films. In March 2007, Maggie Gyllenhaal (“Stranger Than Fiction”) was announced as her replacement.
“I’m not thinking of it as a role that anyone’s played before,” related Gyllenhaal to sources. “I’m not walking into Katie Holmes’ performance. I’m thinking of it as an opportunity to play somebody who’s alive and smart. Chris asked me to do this because he wanted me, not because he wants some generic lady in a dress.
“Doing Batman has shocked me at every turn,” noted the actress. “When I started, I thought, ‘Well, it’s a huge movie, I’ll just do my best to put what I can into it.’ But, in fact, they’ve been really hungry for my ideas.”
In “Dark Knight,” expect Dawes and Dent to spend some quality time together as Dent takes over the DA’s office. A love triangle has even been hinted at involving Wayne, and the Chicago clip teased a freaky scene with the Joker holding a knife to Dawes’ shivering neck as he slowly spins her around a room.
But these aren’t the only new players in Gotham.
BAT-CAMEOS
Everyone knows about the major villains plowing through “Dark Knight,” but what about the surprising stars flying under the radar?
For starters, Eric Roberts, the Oscar-nominated actor who appeared in five episodes of NBC’s “Heroes” last season, plays Salvatore Maroni, a rising mob boss. In the comics, Maroni is responsible for scarring Harvey Dent’s face with acid, creating Dent’s Two-Face persona.
“Spawn” star Michael Jai White beat out hulking rapper David Banner among others for the role of Gamble, a new mobster who bumps heads with Maroni and other mob elements.
But not just ordinary underworld figures are set to appear. Early spy reports from the “Dark Knight” set in downtown Chicago surmised that the Scarecrow would pop up in the film. Amateur video caught a man in a brown hood and suit (the costume worn by actor Cillian Murphy as the Scarecrow in the first film) backed by a gang and arguing with another group of people during a scene in a parking garage. The report jells with the plot, as it would make sense for Scarecrow to make a play for the Gotham underworld.
Murphy wouldn’t comment when approached about the report, but did tell sources just after “Batman Begins” bowed that he was signed to do more than one Bat-film. He’s not the only speculated super-cameo, though.
Anthony Michael Hall (“The Dead Zone”) told sources in May 2007 he’d also joined the cast, but couldn’t specify his role.
“I signed a confidentiality agreement, and I can’t say which part I’m playing because it affects the story,” said the actor. “I can’t give away the suspense. It’s a $200 million surprise, and I don’t want to be the guy to ruin it.”
Online gossip pegged Hall’s expensive secret as the Riddler, a Batman foe obsessed with puzzles. Other reports indicate Hall plays a Gotham journalist obsessed with Bruce Wayne. Whatever the secret is, it’s not a stretch to imagine comic book Easter eggs hidden all over the film. After Arkham Asylum, home to many Gotham villains, was partially destroyed in “Batman Begins,” don’t be surprised to see more Bat-rogues lining up for a slice of the crime spree pie in “Dark Knight” or even a possible third movie.
“The script leaves room for a very interesting follow-up,” Bale admitted to sources. “I think we could take it somewhere else.”
As long as the secretive Nolan’s onboard, expect that somewhere else to be the top of the box-office charts.

David Tennant craves 'Batman' villain role
September 27, 2007
Playing Batman's arch nemesis The Riddler would reportedly be a "boyhood dream come true" for David Tennant.
"I'd love to play the Riddler and be bad to Batman," the Doctor Who star told the Daily Express.
Explaining his love of the 1960's television serial that starred Adam West as the caped crusader, Tennant added: "It was so much fun to watch. I thought The Riddler was one of the most freakish villains, especially with that wild laugh.
"Every morning there would be a new villain - Eartha Kitt as Catwoman with that gurgling meow, Cesar Romero as the frenzied Joker and Burgess Meredith's 'quack-quacking' penguin."

Batman Film Technician Dies In Accident
25 September 2007
By Andrew Hough
Source: LONDON (Reuters)
A special effects technician involved in the filming of the new Batman movie has died in a car accident, the film's producers said on Tuesday.
An investigation has been launched after the man was killed when his 4x4 vehicle crashed into a tree during a dummy film run, Warner Brothers said in a statement.
The studio said that none of the cast, which includes several Hollywood stars, was involved in the accident that occurred at a special effects facility.
It added that the fatal crash did not happen on the set or during filming for "Batman: The Dark Knight".
Media reports said the vehicle was following a stunt car, believed to be the Batmobile, at a property near Chertsey, Surrey.
"There was a fatal accident ... at a special effects facility for "The Dark Knight," the studio said in a statement.
"A special effects technician on the film was in a truck that struck a tree at the end of a test run-through.
"Warner Bros Pictures and the entire cast and crew of 'The Dark Knight' are deeply saddened by this tragedy and their hearts and prayers go out to the family and loved ones of the deceased."
The name of the dead man has not been released.
Surrey Police and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) said they were investigating a workplace fatality on a film set.
An HSE spokesman added: "There was filming of some sort involving a vehicle stunt and there was an accident."
"It appears one vehicle was undertaking some stunt driving and another 4x4 provided the camera platform. The second vehicle and a camera operator were involved in a collision with a tree.
"Batman: The Dark Knight," starring Christian Bale, Michael Caine as his butler, Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman, is due for release in the United Kingdom next year.
Most of the film, director Christopher Nolan's follow-up to "Batman Begins," has been shot in Chicago, with other scenes from London and Hong Kong.
Our thoughts go out to the mans family.

Heath's Joker Scares Caine
24 September, 2007
Today's issue of the Melbourne Sunday Herald-Sun (Sept 23) carries a brief interview with Michael Caine talking about Heath Ledger's performance in THE DARK KNIGHT, suggesting he could be up for an Oscar nomination for his work.
Here's some of what Caine had to say:
"The worry going in was The Joker.
Jack Nicholson was the greatest Joker so, you know, how do you top that? Well, Heath Ledger's done it and he's extraordinary.
He's gone in a completely different direction to Jack. Jack was like a clown figure, benign but wicked, maybe a killer old uncle. He could be funny and make you laugh.
Heath is like a really scary psychopath. I did one scene with him and he was ready to go and had to come up in a lift and raid our place.
I didn't see him for rehearsal and when he came out of the lift he was so incredible I forgot my lines. He frightened the life out of me.
I'd never met him before. He's a lovely guy and his Joker is going to be a hell of a revelation in this picture."
The only photo accompanying the article is the pic of heath holding the knife up to Maggie G's face.

And Two-Face Look's Like?
Wednesday 12th September
EXCLUSIVE

The Dark Knight Wizard World Chicago Update!
August 10, 2007
Source-SH
A scooper has this to report-
I just got back from Wizard World Chicago... with exciting news!! At the end of the DC Nation panel today, it was announced that there WILL be a TDK panel tomorrow!! They didn't specifically mention "TDK", but did drop several hints that it's definitely going to be that.
Here's the info:
At 10am at the DC Comics booth, several things will be given out to those lucky enough to be at the head of line to get them. 1) secret item, 2) wristband, 3) piece of paper with important instructions.
The wristband will get people into a "special DC/WB presentation" in the Dave Cockrum Room at 6pm, not 2pm as previously thought. They're going to pack the room full with people.
NO ELECTRONICS of any kind allowed. Nothing that can record sound and/or images. This includes cell phones, mp3 players, video cameras, still image cameras, etc. No one will be allowed in the panel if they have any of these items. And I wasn't sure if this was a joke (even though they said they were being serious), but apparently there will be people scoping out the room with night vision goggles. They said they want this to be something special for the people in the room, not something special for 1 million people on youtube.
Also, at the beginning of WW this morning, I had talked to a guy working the DC booth. At first he acted like he knew nothing about any TDK panel, but after his boss left he told me that there will be footage shown, but no trailer.

Filming In Chicago Continues And What Happens To The Joker?
Sunday Aug 5th 2007
Source: SH
Note: Spoilers Ahead
The guy reports: First, I talked to this guy last night while I was hanging around the perimeter of the out reasons.*SPOILERS* that the Joker shoots the Tumbler with some sort of missile or rocket which causes the Tumbler to hit a car, flip or jettison into the air, and explode. And, the Batpod is indeed a leftover or a built-in component of the Tumbler which survives the explosion.
He might not know what he is talking about, but, based on our conversation, I think he does. And, if you look at his credits, he actually works on movies; he's not one of the security kids I've tried to talk to who doesn't know anything except how to use a walkie-talkie.
*SPOILERS* DO NOT READ IF YOU ARE TRYING TO AVOID SPOILERS!!!
In the scene, the Joker's semi has already been flipped. As Dent is walking, it is behind him,
It was very difficult to see, but the cops are putting some of Joker's goons into the paddy wagon as Dent (in a gray suit) is walking toward the top of the screen toward the large groups of reporters. As he gets there, you can hear one reporter say *LAST CHANCE TO AVOID SPOILERS* "Mr. Dent, Mr. Dent, was it your plan or the Batman's that led to the arrest of the Joker." You could'nt make it out completely, but they are shooting the scene over and over, and I finally filled in all the words. I kept waiting for someone to pop out and throw acid on dent (I was hoping), but no dice.

Well it was here, for all of 5 minutes but it was still here, for those of you fast enough to catch it The Dark Knight teaser was on the front page but those guys at Warner Brothers are out to remove it off the net. For those of you who never caught it, the teaser has a voice over from Bruce, Alfred and finally The Joker (yes and a whole second of THAT laugh) no actual action but the unveiling of the new logo. But what's very interesting is that the page includes coordinates in San Diego and that the clock is counting down to approximately when the Warner Bros. panel takes place at Comic-Con.
